2020 Panini Donruss #303: The Justin Herbert Rated Rookie

If you want a real Justin Herbert rookie card without paying flagship-chrome money, this is it: 2020 Panini Donruss, card #303, the Rated Rookie. It’s the entry-tier rookie the checklist points to first — licensed, RC-designated, printed in enormous quantity, and stacked deep on eBay at any hour.

The card: #303

Donruss is Panini’s highest-volume football release, and the Rated Rookie subset is its best-known design — a rookie-year template that’s been running since the late 1980s. Herbert’s is #303 in the 2020 base set. That number is the single most useful thing to carry into a search: raw listings write it as “2020 Donruss #303,” and PSA, SGC and BGS labels print it on the flip.

Two numbers get confused with it constantly:

• #P303 — the Optic Preview, a chromium insert seeded into Donruss packs using the Optic stock. Same player, same photo family, different card.
• The Donruss Optic Rated Rookie — a separate product entirely (2020 Donruss Optic), with its own card number and its own Holo/prizm rainbow. That one has its own page here.

If the listing title doesn’t say the number, ask before you bid.

The parallel run

Base Donruss parallels run under the Press Proof name, in colored tiers. On live Herbert #303 listings you’ll find Press Proof Blue, Green, Yellow and Bronze — each a different scarcity step above the base card, and each priced very differently. Above them sit the Optic Preview (#P303) chromium cuts, which come in their own colors (pink shows up regularly on graded copies).

The rookie inserts

Three Herbert inserts recur in 2020 Donruss:

• The Rookies — #TR-JH. The headline rookie insert, cheap and widely available.
• Elite Series Rookies — #ESR-JH. A foil-style rookie insert, a step scarcer than The Rookies.
• Rookie Holiday Sweaters — #SW-JH. A memorabilia card with a swatch, and the most distinctive-looking Herbert card in the product.

How to buy it

1. Search the number, not the name. “Herbert Rated Rookie” pulls in Optic, Preview and later-year Donruss. “303” narrows it to this card fast.
2. Buy raw at the base level. #303 is a high-print card; a clean raw copy is the sensible entry. Save slab money for the Press Proof colors, the Optic Preview, or a graded #303 if you specifically want the PSA 10 look.
3. Confirm the year. Donruss reissues Herbert every season — 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025 base cards all exist and are not rookies. Only 2020 carries the RC.
4. Compare sold comps. Open the eBay links above, filter to sold listings, and price the exact parallel and grade you’re after.
